July 16, 2015 / Leave a Comment The Synchronized Swimming Athletes with Disabilities are a group of individuals who enjoy the sport and are capable of swimming with "endurance, flair, grace, and tremendous cardiovascular fitness" as described on the group's Facebook page. Their mission is to "promote the sport of synchronized swimming amongst our youth and adults with disabilities. To globally expand synchronized swimming to the disabled population and introduce the enrichment, athleticism and therapeutic value that synchronized swimming can bring to their lives anywhere in the World." They hope to incorporate Athletes with Disabilities (AWD) into into Synchronized Swimming Clubs across the nation and to include this sport in the Paralymics on an international scale. This organization recognizes that the Paralympics do not exclude any individuals with a disabilities, as some other similar events do. All individuals who are interested in this sport and who have a disability are welcome to join the current swimmers. Those who wish to participate in the Paralympics have additional qualifications that must be met, but those currently participating include individuals who have the following disabilities: amputation(s), all types of intellectual disabilities, including Autism Spectrum Disorder and Down Syndrome, Epilepsy, Cerebral Palsy, Osteogenisis Imperfecta, Spina Bifida, Paralysis, Permanent Physical Injuries to Joints, and Visual Impairments.
